About Import Cost Calculator

The price a foreign supplier quotes (FOB) is only the start. By the time imported timber reaches your yard it has accumulated freight, insurance, customs duty, surcharge, IGST and clearing charges. This calculator builds up the full landed cost step by step using the Indian import duty structure, giving you the true per-unit cost you must price above to make a margin.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between FOB and CIF?
FOB (Free On Board) is the goods value at the exporter's port - it excludes shipping. CIF (Cost, Insurance, Freight) adds the cost of getting the goods to your port. Indian customs duty is calculated on the CIF value, so freight and insurance increase your duty, not just your shipping bill.
How is IGST calculated on imports?
IGST is applied not just on the goods value but on the CIF plus Basic Customs Duty plus Social Welfare Surcharge - so you pay tax on the duty itself. This compounding is why landed cost can be 30-40% above CIF. IGST is creditable for GST-registered businesses, but it still affects cash flow.
Are these duty rates correct for my timber?
Duty rates depend on the exact HS code (timber species, sawn vs rough, etc.) and change with government notifications and trade agreements. The defaults here are illustrative. Always confirm the current Basic Customs Duty and IGST rate for your specific HS code with your customs broker before committing to an import.
