Sizing before detailing
Work these in structural order — capacity first, then detailing, then finish. Detailing a member that is undersized is wasted drawing time.
Start with what the element has to carry: floor spans, posts and columns, and where exposure governs, wind load to IS 875. Timber design is usually controlled by deflection rather than strength, so a member that passes on stress can still fail the serviceability check — and bounce is what the client notices.
Then the envelope: cladding and decking gaps. Gaps are set from the species’ tangential movement and its moisture content on the day of fixing, not from a standard figure — boards fixed dry in May and boards fixed after a wet week need different gaps.
