About Flooring Coverage Calculator

Whether laying solid hardwood, engineered planks or laminate, you need enough material to cover the room plus an allowance for the offcuts created when planks are cut to fit at walls and around obstacles. This tool calculates floor area, the number of planks and packs needed, and the cost - with a waste allowance that you can raise for diagonal or herringbone layouts.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much waste should I allow for wood flooring?
For a standard straight lay in a simple rectangular room, 5-8% covers cutting waste. Increase to 10% for rooms with many alcoves or obstacles, and 15% for diagonal or herringbone patterns where angled cuts create far more offcuts. Always round up to whole packs.
Why order from the same batch?
Wood colour and grain vary between production batches and even more between trees. Ordering all your flooring from one batch (lot number) ensures consistent colour and figure across the floor. Buy slightly extra at the same time - matching a batch later is often impossible.
Should I acclimatise the flooring first?
Yes. Solid and engineered wood must sit in the room where it will be laid for 48-72 hours (sometimes longer) so its moisture content balances with the room. Laying un-acclimatised wood is the leading cause of gaps in winter and buckling in summer. Keep a couple of spare planks for repairs.
