About Glue Consumption Tool

Adhesive is bought by weight but applied by area, at a spread rate that varies widely by glue type and joint. Under-applying starves the joint and weakens the bond; over-applying wastes costly adhesive and causes squeeze-out. This tool calculates exactly how much glue a job needs from the bond area, number of glued faces, spread rate and a waste allowance, then converts that into packs and cost.

Formulas Used

Total bond area = Area per joint x Number of joints/facesGlue (grams) = Total area x Spread rate x (1 + waste%)Kilograms = Grams / 1000Packs = ceil(Kilograms / Pack size)Typical spreads: PVA 150-250, PUR 120-180, epoxy 200-400 g/m2

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I glue one face or both?
It depends on the adhesive. Most PVA and PUR joints need glue on only one face for a good bond. Contact adhesive must go on both faces and be left to flash off before joining. If your process coats both faces, set the joints/faces count to two so the calculation doubles the glue.
What spread rate should I use?
Follow the manufacturer's datasheet for your specific product - it is the only reliable source. As a starting guide, PVA wood glues run 150-250 g/m2, polyurethane 120-180, and gap-filling epoxy 200-400. Porous or rough surfaces and end grain absorb more and need a higher rate.
Why add a waste allowance for glue?
Glue is lost to squeeze-out at joint edges, residue left in rollers, trays and nozzles, and skinning-over of mixed adhesive that is not used in time. 10% is typical; raise it for hand-spreading, small batches, or two-part glues with a short pot life where some always cures before use.
