FAQ

Is golden ratio used in Indian design?
Yes — Vastu Shastra and temple architecture use proportional grids very close to φ. Traditional Rajasthani and South Indian furniture makers have used these proportions for centuries, though not always by that name.
How do Fibonacci numbers relate?
Consecutive Fibonacci numbers (1,1,2,3,5,8,13,21…) converge to φ. Craftsmen use Fibonacci dimensions (8mm, 13mm, 21mm gaps) for natural harmony without explicit calculation.
Do I have to follow the golden ratio exactly, or is it just a starting point?
Treat it as a starting point, not a rule. The golden ratio (1:1.618) gives proportions that tend to feel balanced to the eye, which is why it's a handy first guess for things like drawer fronts, frames or cabinet faces. But real projects have to answer to real constraints — standard board widths, the size of what goes inside, the space on the wall. Use the ratio to get into the right ballpark, then nudge the numbers to suit the job. A piece that's slightly off the ratio but fits its purpose always beats a mathematically perfect one that doesn't.

How the calculation works

One dimension is set and the other follows from the ratio. It is a proportional starting point, not a rule — sightlines, available board widths and what the piece has to hold override it every time.

With phi = 1.618034: height = width x phi, or width = height / phi, or from a diagonal d the width = d / sqrt(1 + phi^2) with height = width x phi.

Worked example
