FAQ

Why does Hoppus give only 78.54% of true volume?
The quarter-girth formula (G/4)^2 assumes a square cross-section. The ratio of a square inscribed in a circle to the full circle is pi/4 = 0.7854. This built-in deduction accounts for round log waste in sawing.
How is Hoppus used in India today?
IS 1902:2015 defines measurement in cubic metres, but Hoppus is common for imported logs. Indian importers at Gandhidham, Kandla and Nhava Sheva convert: 1 Hft = 0.02832 m3.
Why is the Hoppus system still used when it under-measures volume?
Because that 'under-measurement' was the point. The Hoppus rule was designed in 1736 to estimate the volume of usable squared timber you could actually saw out of a round log, automatically setting aside the slabs lost when you square it. So while it gives about 78.5% of the true geometric volume, that figure is closer to what the buyer can really use. Generations of price data and contracts across the UK, India and the Commonwealth are built on it, which is why the trade has never had a good reason to abandon it.

How the calculation works

The girth is divided by four, squared, and multiplied by the length. Squaring a quarter of the girth is the same as pretending the round log is a square beam that would fit inside it — which is roughly what a mill can actually saw out, and why the figure lands about a fifth below true round volume.

The quarter-girth method deducts about 21% against true geometric volume. That deduction is intentional in the Hoppus system and is not an error.

Worked example
