About Acclimation Calculator

Acclimation (or conditioning) is the process of letting wood reach moisture equilibrium with its final installation environment before it is fitted. Skipping this step is the number one cause of flooring gaps, cupping, buckling and furniture joint failure. This tool calculates the target EMC for the room, how far the wood's current MC is from that target, and how many days of on-site acclimation are needed.

Formulas Used

Target EMC from room T and RH (Hailwood-Horrobin)MC gap = | Current wood MC - Target EMC |Acclimation days ~ base x thickness_factor x gap_factor x airflow_factorThicker boards and poor airflow increase the time sharplyReady when wood MC is within ~1-2% of room EMC

Frequently Asked Questions

How long should flooring acclimate before installation?
It depends on the MC gap, not a fixed number of days. The old rule of 3 days is often wrong. If delivered flooring is at 8% MC and the room EMC is 8%, almost no acclimation is needed. If there is a 4-5% gap, solid wood can need 2-3 weeks. This tool gives a realistic estimate from your actual numbers.
Why must I acclimate to the room, not the warehouse?
Wood always moves toward the EMC of wherever it ends up. If you acclimate in a humid warehouse then install in a dry AC room, the wood will keep shrinking after installation and gap or crack. Always condition wood in the actual room, at its normal operating temperature and humidity, with the HVAC running.
Does stickering really speed up acclimation?
Dramatically. Wood exchanges moisture through its surfaces. Boards stacked flat or left boxed only expose the top, so they acclimate slowly and unevenly. Stickering (thin spacers between every layer) exposes all faces to air, cutting acclimation time substantially and giving uniform moisture - this tool factors that in.
