About Acclimation Calculator
Acclimation (or conditioning) is the process of letting wood reach moisture equilibrium with its final installation environment before it is fitted. Skipping this step is the number one cause of flooring gaps, cupping, buckling and furniture joint failure. This tool calculates the target EMC for the room, how far the wood's current MC is from that target, and how many days of on-site acclimation are needed. Installers mostly ask one question — how long to acclimate hardwood flooring — and this gives a defensible answer from actual site conditions rather than a guess.

The target moisture content is real physics — it is where the timber will settle for the conditions given. The time to get there is an estimate built from the things that actually govern it: thickness above all, then how far the timber has to travel, then whether air can reach every face.

Target EMC comes from the Hailwood-Horrobin two-hydrate equation as published in the USDA FPL Wood Handbook. Days = 2 x (thickness/20)^1.6 x (0.5 + 0.9 x MC gap) x airflow factor x stacking factor x (0.7 + 0.6 x specific gravity) x product factor, halved.The target EMC is a published equation. The day count is NOT — it is an estimate from thickness, airflow and stacking, and the NWFA is explicit that acclimation is a moisture-reading event rather than a calendar one. Use the days to plan, then measure: NWFA accepts up to 4% difference from the subfloor for strip under 3 inches and 2% for boards 3 inches and wider.

Limitations of this calculation
Estimates time from thickness and the moisture gap, assuming properly stickered stock with airflow on all faces. It does not account for banded or wrapped stacks, airflow obstruction, seasonal shifts during the period, or coated surfaces.
Do not use this for Warranty compliance for flooring or joinery. Follow the manufacturer acclimation instruction where one exists.

Worked example
Common mistakes to avoid
- Acclimatising wood in the garage, then installing in an air-conditioned room. Match the room it will live in.
- Stacking boards flat on the floor without stickers. Only the top faces acclimatise; the pack stays wet inside.
- Rushing thick stock. Doubling thickness roughly quadruples the time, not doubles it.
