About Meranti Red Lauan

Meranti Red Lauan is a soft timber that works easily but bruises and dents in service, with a Janka hardness of 800 lbf (3,558 N) and a density of about 0.52 g/cm³. It grows in Southeast Asia and the Pacific.

Tangential movement of 7.5% against 3.0% radial puts the T/R ratio at 2.50. That is the ratio to watch: it predicts cupping in wide flatsawn boards better than either figure alone. Its fibre saturation point is near 28%. Below it, movement is the governing constraint on this species: 7.5% tangential against 3.0% radial, a T/R ratio of 2.50. Flatsawn boards will cup; quartersawn stock is worth the premium here. — wide boards need real expansion room, not a token gap.

MachiningEasy to work thanks to its low density, and it machines to a fair surface, but interlocked grain causes tear-out in planing, lightweight stock splinters on end grain, and some species carry enough silica to blunt cutters. Surfaces stay grainy even after good machining, so sand to a finer grit than you'd expect.
FasteningTakes standard fittings and fastenings easily.
GluingExcellent in the lighter species; the denser ones need more care.
FinishingStains, paints and polishes well, but the open grain and large pores must be filled first for a smooth, glossy result.

DryingSeasons well with little degrade, though thin stock tends to warp. Watch incoming moisture content: imported stock often arrives at 10–12%, too wet for furniture and joinery, and needs further drying.

Durability & use classification

Red Meranti is rated moderately durable (EN 350 Class 3) and is susceptible to insect attack; the sapwood takes preservative readily but the heartwood barely absorbs it. Be aware the name covers a lot of ground: meranti (or lauan) spans over 120 Shorea species, sorted commercially into four colour/weight groups — dark red, light red, white and yellow — and strength varies enormously between them. Most Shorea species are IUCN-listed as critically endangered, so certified stock matters.

Typical applications & suitability

Indoor — Chiefly an interior and utility timber — the world's plywood workhorse. Dark red meranti is the stronger, more durable pick; light red is softer and suits non-structural interior work.

Documented end-uses: plywood (its dominant use worldwide), interior furniture and cabinetmaking, general construction and concrete forms, doors and window frames, panelling, flooring, mouldings, skirting and architraves, veneer, boatbuilding and turnery.

Is Meranti Red Lauan strong enough for furniture or flooring?
It's a softer timber at 800 lbf (3,558 N), so it dents more easily than oak or teak and isn't the first choice for high-traffic flooring. Where it shines is lighter work — panels, mouldings, interior joinery and anywhere low weight and easy machining matter more than bruise resistance. Match it to the job and it performs nicely.
Is Meranti Red Lauan suitable for outdoor projects?
It's moderately durable (Class 3, EN 350), which puts it in the 'fine outdoors with a bit of care' bracket. For anything in ground contact or constantly wet, you'll want a preservative treatment or a coating you keep up. For covered or well-drained outdoor use it does well, especially if you cut away the non-durable sapwood and let air move around the timber.
Is Meranti Red Lauan prone to cupping or warping?
It needs a little respect here. Its tangential shrinkage (7.5%) is well above its radial (3%) — a T/R ratio of roughly 2.5 — which means the wood moves unevenly as it dries and can cup if you rush it. The fix is straightforward: use properly seasoned, quarter-sawn boards where you can, acclimatise the timber to the room before fixing, and don't trap it without room to breathe.
