Durability & use classification

SPF is rated slightly durable (EN 350 Class 4) with poor decay resistance, and the spruce component is difficult to treat, so this is an interior, protected-construction timber. Understand what you're buying: SPF is not a species but a grading combination of spruces, pines and firs sharing similar design values. Western/Canadian SPF may include Engelmann, Sitka, black, red and white spruce, lodgepole and jack pine, balsam and alpine fir; SPF-South adds Norway (red) pine and others. Any board could be any of them.

Typical applications & suitability

Indoor — The default framing lumber of North America — chosen for high fiber strength relative to weight, easy workability, straightness and price. It is a volume commodity, and specified as a design group rather than a species.

Documented end-uses: house construction and wall framing, trusses, joists and rafters, general framing and carcassing, interior projects and panelling, plus remanufacture into furniture, mouldings, crates and pallets.

Where it shines is lighter work — panels, mouldings, interior joinery and anywhere low weight and easy machining matter more than bruise resistance. Match it to the job and it performs nicely.
Will Spruce-Pine-Fir SPF hold up outdoors?
Honestly, not on its own — it's rated Slightly Durable (Class 4, EN 350), so untreated it won't last long once it's exposed to weather or damp. If you want to use it outside, it needs proper preservative treatment and a maintained finish. For interior work, though, durability isn't a concern at all and you can use it freely.
